Confused by photography terms?
We break down Fine Art, Editorial, and Documentary style wedding photography to help you brief your photographer and define your visual legacy,
In the world of luxury photography, these are actually three very different languages.
As Alchemists, our craft lies in blending these elements to create a gold standard that is unique to you. But to get what you want, you first need to know what to ask for.
Here is our guide to decoding the language of light, so you can define the visual legacy you want to leave behind.
Also known as: Photojournalism, Candid, Reportage.
This is the art of invisibility. Documentary style wedding photography is about capturing the raw, unscripted truth of the day. The photographer does not interfere, direct, or move objects. They wait for the tear to fall, the laugh to explode, or the veil to catch the wind naturally.
Also known as: High-Fashion, Vogue-Style, Posed.
If Documentary is about truth, Editorial is about perfection. Inspired by fashion magazines, this style involves deliberate posing, controlled lighting, and an emphasis on style, architecture, and beauty. This is where the concept of “Pangling” thrives. The photographer acts as a director, adjusting your chin, fixing your dress train, and finding the angle that makes you look like a supermodel.
Also known as: Light & Airy, Film Aesthetic.
Fine art vs editorial wedding photography is a common confusion. While Editorial is bold and sharp, Fine Art is soft and painterly. It prioritizes natural light, pastel tones, and clean compositions. It often looks like a watercolor painting—dreamy, ethereal, and incredibly romantic.
Also known as: Moody, Story-driven.
This style treats your wedding like a motion picture. It uses dramatic lighting (shadows, silhouettes, sunsets) and wide angles to establish the scene. A cinematic wedding video in Bali often focuses on movement and grandeur—showcasing the epic cliffs of Uluwatu or the vastness of a Kintamani sunrise to make your love story feel larger than life.
Most photographers stick to one lane. They are only documentary or only fine art.
At The Brides Indonesia, we believe in the Hybrid Approach. We act as Alchemists, mixing these ingredients to create a complete narrative:
When you come in for your consultation, don’t just tell us “I want good photos.” Show us your Feeling.
